SwimCount™ Harvester 3 mL: The Advanced Microfluidic Device for Intrauterine Insemination (IUI)

SwimCount™ Harvester 3 mL: The Advanced Microfluidic Device for Intrauterine Insemination (IUI)

The SwimCount™ Harvester 3 mL is a MDR CE Mark Approved sperm purification device specifically designed for handling larger semen sample volumes, making it the ideal choice for Intrauterine Insemination (IUI) Treatment.

By combining MotilityCount ApS’ patented membrane technology with an intuitive design, the Harvester offers a safe and user-friendly solution for sperm preparation in Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART).

Why Choose the SwimCount™ Harvester 3 mL?

Mimicking Nature, Maximising Quality

The SwimCount™ Harvester mimics the natural selection of the best Progressive Motile Sperm Cells (PMSCs). It purifies the sperm sample by allowing only the PMSCs to pass through the device’s membrane system, utilizing the sperm cells' progressive motility for separation.

The PMSCs recovered using this technique show improved sperm quality parameters, notably an increased number of PMSCs with very low DNA Fragmentation and better Morphology.

Superior Workflow and Safety

The microfluidic selection methodology significantly improves laboratory workflow compared to conventional methods like Density Gradient Centrifugation (DGC) and Swim-up.

 Feature Benefit
Closed System Design Ensures a safer process with a much lower risk of contamination from germs or dust, as you cannot touch the membrane. This eliminates the need to place the device inside a Petri dish during incubation.
Minimised Handling The device requires very few manipulation steps, significantly reducing the risk of human error, saving time, and requiring less cultivation media. The total number of steps is reduced to 4, compared to 13 steps for DGC.
Reduced Evaporation The closed system prevents evaporation of the Sperm Preparation Media during incubation, which otherwise can cause the sperm cells to shrink (dehydrate) and lower their quality.
Optimised Concentration The 3 mL device utilises the same membrane surface area as the 1 mL version. By using only 0.8 mL of Sperm Preparation Media, the SwimCount™ Harvester 3 mL achieves a high concentration of Motile Sperm Cells above the membrane, which is preferred for IUI procedures.
Simpler Loading Loading the semen sample is improved by six small pillars/spikes in the bottom chamber, which improve the flowrate and ensure the sample is distributed more evenly across the membrane.

Clinical Performance for IUI

The SwimCount™ Harvester 3 mL has demonstrated superior performance in IUI studies when compared to DGC and the ZyMōt® 3 mL device.

In a comparative analysis of post-preparation sperm characteristics for IUI (N=90), the SwimCount™ Harvester 3 mL results showed:

  • Superior Sperm DNA Fragmentation Rate (SDFR) and Motility after preparation compared to the DGC method.
  • A motile sperm recovery rate comparable to DGC.
  • Outperformance of ZyMōt® in terms of motile sperm recovery rate and motile sperm concentration.
  • The preparation time is shorter than DGC, allowing other laboratory tasks to be performed during the 30-minute incubation period.
