Aluminium cryo canes are lightweight and facilitate organisation of samples in a liquid nitrogen storage tank.  The primary function of these canes is to provide a structured organisation system that allows IVF laboratory staff to efficiently store, locate, and retrieve specimens preserved in Liquid Nitrogen.

Aluminium cryo canes are tools designed to hold and organize plastic goblets and vials within liquid nitrogen storage tanks. These slender, rod-like structures measure 29cm in length (long cryo cane) and 14.5cm in length (short cryo cane) featuring various configurations to accommodate different vial sizes and quantities.

Most aluminium cryo canes are designed with specific features that enhance their functionality in cryogenic environments. These include hook-shaped tops for easy handling with tongs, colour-coding capabilities for sample identification, and various shelf or slot configurations that securely hold different types of cryovials. The standard aluminium cryo cane can typically accommodate 4-6 cryovials, depending on the specific design and vial dimensions.

Mitrone Healthcare supplies aluminium cryo canes in two sizes; long version - 29cm and short version - 14.5cm long.

Standard Components

  • Lightweight aluminium rod (29 cm long cane or 14.5cm short cane)
  • Hook or loop at the top for handling
  • Fits 13mm goblets
  • Slots or shelves for vial placement
  • Optional colour-coding system
  • Identification tab attachment point

Advantages of Aluminium Canes

  • Exceptional Thermal Conductivity: Aluminium rapidly reaches equilibrium with surrounding temperatures, minimizing thermal shock to samples
  • Lightweight Construction: Reduces strain during handling and minimizes storage tank weight load
  • Corrosion Resistance: Withstands the harsh conditions of liquid nitrogen without degradation
  • Durability: Maintains structural integrity through repeated freeze-thaw cycles
  • Non-magnetic Properties: Prevents interference with sensitive laboratory equipment
  • Cost-effectiveness: Provides excellent performance at a reasonable price point

Designed for use in Reproductive Medicine

Fertility clinics and reproductive medicine facilities utilise aluminium cryo canes for the cryopreservation of gametes, embryos, and reproductive tissues. The precise organisation capabilities are crucial for maintaining sample identity in these sensitive applications.

  • Embryo storage for IVF procedures
  • Sperm and oocyte preservation
  • Reproductive tissue banking

Safe Handling Procedures

  • Use appropriate tools: Always handle cryogenically cold aluminium cryo canes with insulated tongs or cryo gloves to prevent thermal injuries.
  • Avoid rapid temperature changes: Allow canes to warm gradually when removing from storage to prevent thermal stress on the metal.
  • Handle with care: Despite their durability, aluminium canes can bend if excessive force is applied. Maintain gentle handling techniques.
  • Proper insertion and removal: Insert and remove canes vertically from storage tanks to prevent damage to canes or samples.
  • Avoid overcrowding: Maintain appropriate spacing between canes in storage systems to prevent entanglement and facilitate easy retrieval.

Safety Reminder

Always wear appropriate personal protective equipment when handling cryogenically cold aluminium cryo canes. The high thermal conductivity that makes aluminium ideal for cryostorage also means it can cause instant tissue damage if touched with bare skin when at liquid nitrogen temperatures.
